it's the day after my anniversary so it might be tough this year, which sucks since it's early this year and the weather so be warmer than previous editions.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23: GRAND TOUR LITE

This informal Los Angeles Wheelmen ride revisits the best of the Grand Tour, but at shorter distances. All rides start and finish in Malibu and spend a lot of time on Pacific Coast Highway in sight of the Pacific Ocean. The Metric goes to Port Hueneme for lunch; the Full Century adds a loop through Oxnard and Ventura; and the challenging Double Metric climbs up the canyons to lunch in Moorpark, then crosses the fields of Oxnard to Port Hueneme before heading back to Malibu on the P.C.H.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20: FIVE COUNTY CENTURY


The Los Angeles Wheelmen will be running their annual visit to the high country around Frazier Park, with a ride that touches Ventura, Kern, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles Counties. (You can skip riding through L.A. County, or just count driving through it, to shorten the ride by one steep climb.) Details will be announced later on the web page:

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13: COLONEL ALLENSWORTH CENTURY & FUN RIDE
Crankin’ Time

puts on this ride in honor of Colonel Allensworth, Army chaplain of the fabled Buffalo Soldiers, who co-fouded a town now home to Allensworth State Historical Park. Rides of 40 (recommended for beginners), 80 (intermediate), or 100+ miles (advanced) cross the farmlands of the San Joaquin Valley and foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Buffalo Soldier BBQ, celebration of the founding of Allensworth, exhibits, music, arts and crafts.

The Kern Wheelmen of Bakersfield

offer their 26th annual Ghastly Ordeal, with six rides ranging from a mere Trembling Twenty up to an intimidating Hideous Hundred. Halloween costumes and bike decorations are encouraged. Ride includes Spooky rest stops, sag support, and if what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger -- and hungrier, there’s a post-ride meal.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20: SANTA BARBARA CENTURY


A challenging Century with 9600 feet of climbing up the infamous Gibraltar Road; Metric Century has a "mere" 4000 feet of climb. Both rides are for experienced riders. New Foothill course is 34 miles, but with 2200 feet of climbing. Last year’s second annual ride raised $40,000 for charities.
