Got in just 34.6 miles today at 17.3mph avg. Small write-up here. Was damned hot and humid. I can't remember having to stop so many times during such a short ride since...? I am wiped out.
While I was riding, my elderly friends called me (twice) from the hospital asking me to call them back asap. When they couldn't reach me, they called another friend who has been going out there to support them and she drove in from Asheboro (about 1:15 to the hospital), even though she'd just spelled me on Thursday and Friday. She called as she was driving in to let me know to 1) enjoy my ride and 2) to just take this evening off. Of course, didn't hear any of these messages 'til I was done with the ride.... Home now, close to bed. Feeling like I'll sleep before my head hits the pillow.  Gotta be at the hospital again tomorrow afternoon. My friend seems to have hit a plateau, and her kidneys might be starting to fail.  I'll know more tomorrow when I talk to her ICU nurses....Hope your ride conditions aren't as brutal as those I had today, WP. Holy crap, I can't remember when I've last needed to pour water over my head during a ride!  Do be careful out there. The storms that came through here from counties west out to at least Stanly (and perhaps beyond) had lightning. Supposed to be even stormier in this part of the state tomorrow.

Dang, even with sunblock, and after my cool shower, my skin still feels hot and tight, and a bit itchy. Guess I got more sun and heat than I realized....

It was nasty out today, VV. When I have taken Taylor outside this evening, I sit on the steps while she does her stuff - maybe 10-15 min - and the sweat is popping out all over me. I've had more showers today (but just a rinse the last 2 times!) than in a long time in one day.
Looking at the hourly weather for Wilson, it looks like it's going to be nasty after lunch, feels like temps in upper 90s. Not good for me. I will keep one bottle with just water to dump on my head. Fortunately, there seems to be plenty of stores on the route, about every 25mi or so. Well, I best get myself ready for bed so I can get up around 5am.... Hope your friend will be ok.

If I were you, I'd keep an extra water bottle, full of ice and water, in my center jersey pocket: 1) to cool you a bit, and 2) to have extra water for either mouth or head.
One of our rest-stops was at a DIY carwash. We all joked around about putting in the money just to be able to spray one another down with cold water. But I somehow think it was no joke, as every new rider that came in while I was there (sitting in the shade of one of the wash bays for 19 minutes, pouring water from one of my bottles over my head) kept asking the same thing. Thank you for the well-wishes. Your mouth to God's ear....

Is that anywhere near where that fire's now burning? sure hope not... I did a race today...2nd place for the 2nd year in a row, nice T-shirt and $18. Almost pays more than selling house.  1st loser to the District TT champ doesn't suck. I know I put the hurt on her because she was making all kinds of noises and gasping when she crossed the finish line. Her spcialty is track, women's team pursuit, and she hasn't ridden a 30K TT in 2 mos. Mission: Accomplished.

I guess it started yesterday, they had a couple CDF fire vans up there. Road were all closed from all points yesterday. I guess it grew pretty quick over night.
